Emma Younger for ABC News reports:
per cent of female victims of domestic violence . .. have experienced financial abuse, according to the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.
Despite the scale of the problem, there are few services available to victims of financial abuse and it can be extremely difficult to navigate the system to clear debts incurred due to financial abuse.
WEstjustice wants government to provide more funding for specialist family violence lawyers and financial counsellors to deliver frontline economic abuse services.
It also wants more financial counsellors and lawyers embedded in family violence services so victims can begin rebuilding their lives free from debt as soon as possible.
Ms Tonkin said companies and service providers also need to lift standards to recognize a victim of family violence who is struggling to pay debts.
“There needs to be an embedded culture of responding flexibly and well to family violence issues across the entire company from the person who answers the phone right through to the CEO,” she said.
