Why some doctors don’t take women’s pain seriously – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A systematic review in 2018 by Anke Samulowitz was titled “Brave men” and “Emotional women”, confirming that doctors’ perceptions of and interactions with patients were different dependent on their gender.

Men are viewed as stoic and heroically carry on in the face of pain: when a man says that the pain is a problem, he is more likely to be listened to, physically investigated and effectively treated.

Research shows that men are more likely to receive pain relief, whereas women were more likely to be prescribed antidepressants or referred to a mental health service. The “emotional woman” in pain.

Child sex abuse survivor confronts government on Redress Scheme

Child sex abuse survivor Georgie Burg attended a roundtable on the National Redress Scheme where she hoped to deliver this speech.

You have your token gesture of a Redress Scheme, where you can say you’re ‘doing something’. But you have no right to try to reframe this so that you can feel better about yourselves.

I would rather stay number 577 – anonymous in the royal commission’s Book of Messages held at the National Library – than hear you say my name. Start saying the names of survivors whose experience of bravery far outweigh anything you have achieved. Rip up this Redress Scheme and start again. Give survivors the compensation they deserve.

We aren’t stupid. We were children who were raped and abused and somehow some of us survived it.

You’re seriously telling me that this is the best you can do?

Man arrested after allegedly inappropriately grabbing woman in Walmart restroom

Police say a man was in a women’s restroom at a southern Indiana Walmart when he inappropriately grabbed a woman.

The suspect, Nathaniel Brown, told police that he “bumped” into the victim, who was a Walmart employee. That’s not what she says happened. On Friday, Clarksville police say a woman was washing her hands when a man came up behind her out of a stall and grabbed her inappropriately.

“He was in the electronics section of Walmart doing research there about laws that pertain to transgender bathrooms,” Mull said. “Whether that was a legitimate inquiry he was doing or some sort of defense that he was simply exploring to assert in this case, I don’t know. And again, it’s irrelevant consideration. What’s important is that a female who was working hard went into the restroom was allegedly sexually assaulted battered by this individual.”

Are sexual abuse victims being diagnosed with a mental disorder they don’t have?

The lack of recognition for complex PTSD by the psychiatric establishment means it is difficult for sexual abuse victims who might suffer from it to receive the right diagnosis.

“It’s powerfully and deeply ironic to me that women who experience profound trauma [ie sexual abuse] are pathologised as having a personality disorder,” explains Torontonian freelance journalist, artist and resilience coach Lisa Walter, 50, a sexual abuse victim who says she has been misdiagnosed with BPD. “I think it makes it easier for the world to flush us down the toilet.”

Complex PTSD usually requires different treatments from those given to patients with BPD. Sexual abuse should be treated with some form of trauma-related therapy, Van der Kolk says, while BPD requires learning to control one’s aggressive urges, improve one’s relationship with others, moderate difficult emotions and compulsive behaviours.

PM ‘appalled’, unmoved on One Nation preferences after pro-gun footage

The Prime Minister said he was “appalled” by revelations that Pauline Hanson’s key lieutenants were caught on tape with pro-gun lobbyists in the US seeking to secure millions of dollars in donations.

The documentary shows footage from a meeting in Washington DC with the powerful National Rifle Association, where Mr Dickson discusses his hopes to change Australia’s gun laws.

“We get the balance of power, very simply that means that we have the testicles of the government in our hand at every given stage,” he said.

Brampton, Ont., mayor alarmed after convicted sex offender ‘dumped’ into his city

Madilyn Harks, formerly known as Matthew Harks, was convicted 3 times for sexual assault against girls under 8.

“It’s unacceptable and … we want an explanation how a person with no ties to Brampton, from the other side of the country, would simply be dropped in here. We happen to be the youngest community in Canada with a disproportionate amount of children. It’s completely unacceptable.”
