The granddaughter of Amnesty International’s founder has vowed she will not donate “a penny” to the charity after it blacklisted JK Rowling’s women-only organisation.
Iseult White is the granddaughter of Sean MacBride, the former Irish foreign minister who helped establish Amnesty in 1961.
Amnesty International UK published a report accusing dozens of women’s organisations of being “anti-rights”, including JK Rowling’s charity, Beira’s Place.
Ms White said her grandfather would be “appalled” by the charity’s current position, saying it contradicted everything Mr MacBride stood for, The Times reports.
She insisted his life’s work centred on protecting people who spoke out from genuine conscience, arguing groups like Ms Rowling’s charity and For Women Scotland were acting from principled positions, not malicious ones.
Amnesty International UK is now being investigated by the Charity Commission over the report.
