The new Archbishop of Canterbury should have her appointment “halted” amid concerns over her previous handling of safeguarding cases, a General Synod member has said.

Dame Sarah Mullally is due to take up the role of the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and principle leader of the Church of England next year, following the resignation of Justin Welby over his handling of abuse allegations last year.

Dame Mullally is the current Bishop of London and Archbishop-elect of Canterbury and will formally take up the role after a ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral on January 28.

However, last week, it emerged that she is the subject of a formal complaint being considered by Church of England officials over her handling of an allegation of abuse made by an individual known as ‘N’.

‘N’ claimed that the lack of investigation into his claims by Bishop Mullally caused him to have such a severe breakdown in his mental health that he made two attempts on his life.

Now, it has emerged that another formal complaint was made against Bishop Mullally regarding her handling of a different case, in which unsubstantiated and false allegations against a retired priest, the Rev Alan Griffin, by a Diocese of London staff member, contributed to the priest taking his own life five years ago.
