A 19 year-old boy is suing an abortion clinic for terminiating his ex-girlfriend’s unborn fetus against his wishes. Ryan Magers, from Madison County in Alabama, has filed a lawsuit against the Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives for giving his unnamed ex the procedure when she was six weeks pregnant. The abortion, performed two years ago when the girl was 16, has also seen Magers take legal action against workers at the clinic, as well as the company that made the abortion pills.
His case set a new legal precedent Wednesday when a judge allowed him become the first person ever to sue on behalf of an aborted fetus, referred to as ‘Baby Roe’ in legal documents. That ruling gives Baby Roe the same legal rights as a living person.
Pro-choice group NARAL Pro-Choice America told Refinery29 the lawsuit was ‘chilling,’ and warned it could herald a new era of ‘dangerous and backward policies.’
