I just had a lecture on this at Uni. I think care feminism needs a rebrand- mum feminism more catchy. Just ask yourself- what would mum say? Not the munchausen mums.
But why does it have to be divided up? Cannot women have multiple aims and desires and components? Why should women be divided into those who ‘care’ vs those who ‘career’? Why pit women against one another, why stereotype into ‘women who are caring’ vs ‘women who are careerists’? Perhaps there are some women somewhere who are totally focused on career without a caring bone in their bodies but I very much doubt it … or if so it would surely have to be a total minority. Similarly, why stereotype women who ‘care’ into a group without career-orientation or ambition?
Please let’s stop stereotyping. There’s enough of that around already coming from other quarters (where, ironically, there’s a contention that they are being ‘flexible’ and ‘all-encompassing’ of humanity!).
Carework should be valued – yes … and on this see Wage Rage for Equal Pay – Australia’s Long Long Struggle, Palgrave Macmillan, 2023 (forthcoming November) – but this doesn’t mean that there is a conflict with fighting for women’s rights, too, in the world of business.
