Sydney Council Votes Against Support for Women — Critical Thinking In a Passive World

On June 28th 2021, during an online Council meeting, the City of Sydney Council voted unanimously to end the Accommodation Grant that the Feminist Legal Clinic (FLC) in Sydney has been the deserving recipient of for years. In one collective swoop of raised hands the Sydney Council proudly continued their campaign against a well-respected and much-needed women’s rights service provider. This grant was in the form of tenancy; a space where the FLC based their important services & support and met with clients, which are often women experiencing male violence (domestic violence).

To show your support for the Feminist Legal Clinic, sign the open letter from Women’s Human Rights Campaign, and please consider contacting the Sydney Council.

Sydney Lord Mayor downgrades feminist legal clinic | Sky News Australia

“Self-described feminist” Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has decided to downgrade the rating of a legal service for girls and women because she feels its values conflict with those of the city, says Sky News reporter Caroline Marcus.“In particular, she’s referring to some of the views that this legal service – the feminist legal clinic – has shared around transgender rights and the transgender movement,” Ms Marcus told Sky News host Chris Kenny.“It’s principal solicitor says she believes you cannot change your gender, that women are women, that men are men; although she’s happy for anyone to express their gender however they please.”Ms Moore on Monday night said the Sydney City Council has a “very inclusive non-discriminatory policy” which “very much includes trans people”.According to Ms Marcus, the legal clinic – which has been operating out of a council-run site in the inner city since 2017 – is set to lose its premises as the council downgrades its rating. The City of Sydney council will vote on Monday night and is expected to terminate the clinic’s lease.

When did liberal men start thinking it was acceptable to tell feminists how to be feminist? | The Independent | The Independent

Pregnant with my third child, I faced more than one self-righteous male informing me that ‘biological sex is a construct.’ The arrogance of this is staggering. Every single human being on this planet exists because of the reproductive labour of female bodies.

Ten years ago The Onion published the piece “Man Finally Put In Charge Of Struggling Feminist Movement”. At the time it was intended as satire but, as with much that seemed a joke in the early noughties, one could be forgiven for thinking it has come true today.

“Beauty, Women’s Bodies and the Law: Performances in Plastic” by Jocelynne Scutt

Beauty, Women's Bodies and the Law, Performances in Plastic by Jocelynne A. Scutt | 9783030279974 | Booktopia

Leading human rights lawyer Jocelynne Scutt AO, known for her
influential contributions to the reform of Australian sexual assault laws,
revisits the vexed question of consent in her latest book.

Clearly, there is more money in women and girls hating their bodies
than accepting them as they are naturally. Reminiscent of the
rough sex defence, “consent” can apparently release surgeons
from their obligation under the Hippocratic Oath: “first, do no
harm”.

Mary Beth Edelson obituary | Art | The Guardian

On a boiling hot morning in June 1984, hundreds of women converged on the Museum of Modern Art in New York to protest. MoMA was holding a huge exhibition of recent art and of the 165 artists showing, only 14 were women. The crowd chanted “You don’t have to have a penis to be a genius” and wore suffragette sashes. Among them was the artist Mary Beth Edelson. By that point Edelson, who has died aged 88, had spent 20 years at the forefront of the feminist art movement.

In 1972 she created a collage titled Some Living American Women Artists/Last Supper. Riffing on the Leonardo da Vinci painting, she replaced the faces of the disciples with those of female artists, among them Yoko Ono, Louise Bourgeois and Helen Frankenthaler. In the place of Jesus is Georgia O’Keeffe. The work became a poster, widely distributed and iconic to those fighting misogyny in the art world.
