Election 2022: Katherine Deves lashes her critics, claim she has been bullied

The embattled Liberal candidate for Warringah said she is “not going anywhere” and lashed her critics for “vile” bullying after Liberals lobbied privately to dump her.

“My opponents, parts of the left media and twittersphere have been unrelenting in calling for me to be disendorsed because of past statements,” she wrote in an email to party members on Monday evening which was obtained by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. “I have been bullied in the most vile way and received death threats. I’m not going anywhere, as the prime minister said yesterday.”

Mosman branch president Peter O’Hanlon said Deves had been misrepresented and torn down by the media and internal enemies.

“The misrepresentation of Katherine has been appalling, some of this from the media and social media and even from within our own party,” he wrote in an email to party members.

“The party has been asking for women to stand for election for years, and when a strong women [sic] does stand, the ‘mean machine’ tries to tear them down.”

Deves has apologised numerous times for her “language” and for any hurt caused by her remarks, but not for her views, saying she stands by her fight for the safety of women and girls in sport. Morrison has also backed Deves, describing the outrage as a “pile-on”.
