‘Horrific’: Childcare worker faces 1623 abuse charges

A 45-year-old former Gold Coast childcare worker has been charged with more than a thousand offences of child abuse, allegedly committed in NSW and Queensland.

A 45-year-old former Gold Coast childcare worker has been charged with more than 1000 offences of child abuse, allegedly committed in NSW and Queensland.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Justine Gough said on Tuesday the offences included 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10, involving 91 children.

They were allegedly committed in Brisbane, Sydney and overseas between 2007 and 2022. The AFP says they occurred at 10 childcare centres in Brisbane, one in Sydney and at one overseas location.

Ms Gough said police were “highly confident” all children recorded in Australia had been identified, and their parents notified. All of the children involved were young girls.

“We allege the 45-year-old man from the Gold Coast recorded all his alleged offending on his phone and cameras,” Ms Gough said.

The man had all the qualifications necessary to work with children, and was only arrested in August of last year. He remains in custody.
