Kids’ gender clinic’s ‘high numbers’ revealed

A Newcastle children’s gender clinic has more than twice the number of patients on hormone blockers as its Sydney counterpart, it can be revealed.

The FOI, by Upper House Labor MP Greg Donnelly, found 487 children and adolescents have been treated by Maple Leaf, an outpatient clinic of John Hunter Hospital, since it opened on April 1, 2021.

That compares with the long-running Gender Clinic at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, which was treating 132 minors as at September 2022 and 130 the year before.

A Newcastle mum, who says her daughter was “suicidal with regret” after taking testosterone for 18 months after being “immediately affirmed” by the John Hunter Hospital, says there should be an inquiry into the approach.
