Cancer is surging among women under 50, with a 16 per cent rise since 2000, without any such rise for men, research shows.
There is concern modern lifestyles are fuelling an epidemic in early onset cancer – before the age of 50 – especially in women.
As well as skin cancer, the new figures show sharp rises in cases of bowel, breast and thyroid cancer in young women. Data show a 10 per cent rise in bowel cancer among young women across Europe since 2000, with concerns it is being driven by diets, especially ultra-processed foods.
Much of the trend was driven by age, but when the age-related increase was stripped out, the rate rose 10 per cent for women, compared to two per cent for men.
Even sharper trends were seen in the youngest age groups, where the 16 per cent rise among women under 50 contrasted with no rise among men.
