Men who have been jailed for sex offences are twice as likely to identify as trans women than any other type of prisoner, government data has revealed.
Figures from the HMPPS Offender Equalities Annual Report show that of the 168 legally-male trans women prisoners in England and Wales, just six were in women’s prisons and the rest in men’s jails last year.
A further 11, who are in men’s institutions, legally changed their gender through a gender recognition certificate.
Transgender women inmates also reportedly expressed their resentment for men who are allegedly pretending to be trans, raising concerns that some male sex offenders are ‘faking’ their new identities.
