North Shore Liberal MP Felicity Wilson to cross the floor alone after party denies conscience vote | SMH

[T]he Coalition will oppose the equality bill introduced to parliament by independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich which brings NSW into line with the other states in terms of changing birth certificates without the need for gender reaffirming surgery.

Greenwich’s bill will also allow for parentage orders for families who have had children through overseas commercial surrogacy.

Labor held two caucus meetings and a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday to debate the bill, and will support it when it goes before parliament later this week.

  1. So the NSW Parliament intends to condone and to promote exploitation, use and abuse of women overseas who are forced into using their bodies as receptacles to provide babies for people who are ignorant of the rights of women not to be treated as commercial uteruses. Women abroad, who are in need of financial support, should not be able to be exploited by Australians who have the finances to use women in this way. The NSW government should – instead of simply taking the exploiter position – think seriously about the rights of women not to be used and abused, simply because they are outside Australia. If we do not accept commercial use and abuse of women as uteruses in Australia, then why should we do so simply because women live and are born outside this country. This is such an obvious case of supporting exploitation simply because women are not born and do not live in Australia.
