The sports that have banned trans women as World Netball implements new rules

Transgender women are banned from competing in women’s international competitions in new rules implemented by World Netball.

After a lengthy consultation, the organisation came to the conclusion that international women’s netball was a ‘gender affected activity’ and said the new policy – which comes in with immediate effect – was required to ensure ‘fairness and safety’.

As a result, only players ‘recorded as female at birth, irrespective of gender identity’ or transgender athletes who can demonstrate they have ‘not experienced the biological effects of testosterone at any time’ will be eligible for women’s international netball.

The presence of transgender athletes in women’s sport has been a contentious issue in recent years and World Netball’s decision follows similar moves by other sporting bodies.
