Why do we blame women for the actions of rapists, traffickers, and abusers?

The culture of victim blaming is rife – and women disproportionately feel the brunt, writes Dr. Jessica Taylor.

There seems to be a misconception that women and girls benefit or profit from a false report (or a genuine report). And that it ruins the man’s life. The reality is quite different. Less than 1pc of rape reports are deemed to be fabricated, which is one of the lowest false report rates of any crime. Further, when women do report rape or abuse, they are usually discredited or blamed – not celebrated or supported. Finally, even when there is significant evidence against men who rape, our UK conviction rate is 1.7pc, so not only will it not ruin his life, he probably will never be prosecuted for his crimes.
