Julia Banks: Liberals show lack of character with attacks on independents

Even in his early days as prime minister, Morrison had many moments that were characterised as ‘Trumpian’ and ended up in the international press for all the wrong reasons.

One was when he said: “We want to see women rise. But we don’t want to see women rise only on the basis of others (i.e. men) doing worse.”

He actually said that. And worse still, it wasn’t off the cuff or a case of the words coming out wrong. It was in his written, prepared speech for International Women’s Day in 2019. At a time when his government’s women problem was under the glare of public scrutiny.

Over the past three years, Morrison has failed to act on this problem, on climate change (think Glasgow) and on integrity (recall the broken promise for a federal anti-corruption commission) to name a few issues. And this has given rise to independent campaigns across the country in what are regarded as safe Liberal seats.

As certain candidates emerged as real threats, the Liberals responded to them in the same way they did to me. Although the incumbent MPs in these seats face perfectly fair and democratic challenges, their attacks use demeaning language and devolve into senseless and nasty personal hit-jobs through the patriarchal prism of entitlement and sexism.

And they go after those who represent the greatest threat to the party and its power: Zoe Daniel in Goldstein, Allegra Spender in Wentworth, and Monique Ryan in Kooyong. An esteemed former foreign correspondent, a successful businesswoman, and a paediatric neurologist respectively.

Articulate professional women who have worked hard their entire adult lives in substantial careers, where their success would have been impossible without high intellect, good judgement, sound values and strong ethics.

Women who have raised families and lived and cared for their local community and for their country.

And yet the Liberals have shamelessly called these women “puppets” and “fake independents”, and their campaigns everything from “a front for the Labor Party and the Greens” to “a fraud” and “immoral”.

All of this is not only insulting and disgusting – it can be harmful and incite further abuse. Not just of these women and their families but of their staff, volunteers and the tens of thousands of people who are supporting them.

These are women with whom, as a former Liberal, I share the same values and beliefs – in truth, integrity, inclusion, climate change action and a future-focused economy. Values and beliefs that have taken a backseat in Morrison’s party to such an extent that they may as well take the word ‘liberal’ out of their party name completely, just as MPs have taken it off their campaign material.

The Liberals do not ‘own’ these seats and these women are not “anti-liberal”. They are “pro Australia”, and our country is lucky that women of their calibre are running for office.

Statement of support for Katherine Deves – Women’s Declaration International

WDI and our supporters all over the world stand in solidarity with Australian Liberal Party candidate for Warringah and co-founder of Save Women’s Sport Australasia, Katherine Deves, against the appalling harassment and threats she is receiving for standing for women’s sex-based rights. We condemn the vile abuse Ms Deves has received for defending women’s rights to single-sex sports, speaking out against the appalling exploitation of surrogacy and arguing that women have equal rights to freedom of opinion and expression, among other things.

Freedom of expression is essential for democratic societies to function. It is the cornerstone on which many of our rights are based. Women cannot participate in politics and public life if they are unable express themselves freely and without fear.

WDI supports the right of politicians, whatever their political affiliation, to express their concerns about the harmful effect of gender ideology and sex-based discrimination. Without freedom of expression politicians are unable to ensure that the rights of women and girls can be fully implemented and protected.

We call on the Australian media and political establishment to condemn wholeheartedly the unwarranted, distressing and dangerous abuse to which Ms Deves is subject.

What Motivated Alex Greenwhich’s Dummy Spit to LNP? | The Lady Kit Kowalski

Independent MP for Sydney, Alex Greenwhich has admitted that he had a deal with the Berejiklian government. Greenwhich will support the Liberal Party for as long as the Liberal Party supports the LGBTQ community.

Alex Greenwhich and Brad Hazzard have spent a fair bit of money together recently.

On 16 March 2022, Alex Greenwhich was alongside Minister for Health Brad Hazzard to announce a new LGBTQ Health Strategy.

Brad Hazzard notes in the video that Alex Greenwhich was “up in the Hunter a few months ago when we opened Maple Leaf House“. This is a gender clinic in Newcastle modelled off the RCH clinic in Melbourne. Their guidelines for treatment are actually the RCH guidelines hosted on their site.

Alex Greenwhich is the LGBTQ candidate for Sydney. He is Clover Moore’s endorsed candidate in the seat and proudly declares himself “Team Clover”.

Alex actively campaigns for transgender rights. Note he says he is consulting only with transgender organisations, not with the wider community.

In 2014, Alex Greenwhich introduced introduced the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment (Change of Sex) Bill – legislation that gives a person the right to change the sex recorded on their birth certificate without changing their married status.

In 2019, while working to decriminalise abortion in NSW, Alex Greenwhich produced abortion legislation where the word “woman” is completely missing. The 2019 act talks about “a person who is pregnant”.

21 November 2021 – Alex Greenwhich has read out a statement in parliament praising ACON’s TransHub.

Alex Greenwhich needs government support to smooth the way for ACON’s Equality Bill. This bill is going to steamroll over women’s rights and child safeguarding in NSW. It is a bill that benefits only doctors, pharmaceutical companies and professional activists.

Transgender comments threaten NSW Premier Perrottet’s minority government

The NSW Coalition’s shaky grasp on government is under threat as a key independent warns he will no longer guarantee supply and confidence if Premier Dominic Perrottet continues to make damaging statements about transgender children and sport.

Sydney MP Alex Greenwich has confirmed that he would withdraw his support for the government if Perrottet’s rhetoric about children’s sport continues.

The premier this week publicly weighed into the debate on excluding transgender people from women’s sports, triggered by inflammatory comments by the embattled Liberal candidate for Warringah, Katherine Deves.

He said he believed it was a matter of physiology that “girls should play sport against girls” and that people should be able to raise issues “without being cancelled”.

Perrottet reiterated the remarks on Thursday, telling a hearing of budget estimates he was entitled to an opinion, which he believed was “in line with fair-minded Australians”.

Greenwich has been crucial to the Coalition being able to govern in minority, but for the first time has threatened to withdraw his support for the government.

During budget estimates on Thursday, the premier said he was being unfairly characterised by Greens MP Abigail Boyd, who accused him of standing “on the side of the transphobes”.

ABC: Stop lying about Kath Deves – Women’s Cooee

We’re not Liberal Party people here at Cooee2ABC. And we’re not anti-ABC. We rely on the ABC for quality journalism. We support the ABC’s continued existence as a national broadcaster, with adequate funding and resources. All the more reason for us to be appalled and alarmed at the lies the ABC’s telling about Katherine Deves, co-founder of Save Women’s Sport Australasia and now the Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Warringah in Sydney. Yes, she’s standing for the Liberal Party but that doesn’t mean the ABC is entitled to tell lies about her. Especially when the lies they’ve been telling about her are all because of her very reasonable opposition to men in women’s sport and the awful practice of kid-transing.

Australian Charity Mails Free Breast Binders to Girls As Young as 12

A new investigation by 4W revealed that TransFolk of WA, a registered Australian charity, is sending chest binders to girls without parental consent or medical oversight. “Chest binding” is the act of forcefully restricting breasts to flatten them as much as possible, and binders are targeted at females.

According to a program report from the TransFolk of WA website, 65 percent of participants in the binder program are minors (under 18). Over 85 percent said that they could not otherwise afford a binder. The program delivered binders to 136 people within a four-month period.

Despite the fact that breast binding is a dangerous activity with serious potential health repercussions, the Pay-it-Forward binder program includes no safeguards.

The “Binder Program” page on the TransFolk of WA website does not include any information about the health risks of breast binding.

I was able to obtain a binder from TransFolk of WA within five days of submitting the form, claiming to be a 14-year-old girl. The binder sent to me, per my honest measurements, was a size XXS. After taking one look at it I knew it was dangerously small for someone of my size to wear; in fact, it barely fit around my thigh, much less my upper body.

The consequences of binding breasts vary and may be similar to those caused by the illegal and widely condemned practice of “breast ironing” (aka breast flattening). Breast binding has been found to cause severe damage to ribs, lungs and breasts and potentially harm a woman’s ability to breastfeed in the future. Chest restriction can exacerbate existing respiratory illness, and wearing a binder when sick can lead to a build-up of fluid in the lungs. Binding can lead to fractured ribs which puts wearers at a much higher risk of puncturing or collapsing a lung.

In a 2016 cross-sectional study on the health impact of chest binding among transgender adults, researchers found that over 97 percent of participants reported at least one of 28 negative outcomes attributed to binding.

Dominic Perrottet weighs in on transgender inclusion in women’s sport amid Katherine Deves saga | Daily Mail Online

  • Liberal candidate Katherine Deves apologised for anti-trans tweets last year
  • Moderate figures in party have called for her to be disendorsed for Warringah
  • Ms Deves a no-show at community  forum as she continues to divide Liberals
  • NSW Premier has weighed into topic of transgender athletes in women’s sport
  • Believes  ‘girls and women should be free to play sport against girls and women.’

The NSW Premier has called for ‘sensitive’ debate on the topic but believes that ‘girls and women should be free to play sport against girls and women.’

The text messages, obtained by The Australian, reveal the NSW Premier supports the Prime Minister’s position on women and sport – going against his treasurer Matt Kean’s calls for Katherine Deves, the federal candidate for the northern Sydney seat of Warringah, to be disendorsed.

Mr Perrottet has expressed his support for women and girls fighting for transgender athletes to be ousted from female sports.

‘I agree with most fair minded Australians that girls and women should be free to play sport against girls and women, particularly where there might otherwise be an unfair advantage – it’s a matter of fairness and physiology,’ he said.

Ms Deves revealed she has been bombarded with death threats by left-wing activists on social media.

Father Ted creator backs Katherine Deves over anti-trans comments

Father Ted and The IT Crowd creator Graham Linehan has rallied support for Katherine Deves after she was condemned over repeated anti-trans comments.

The hashtag created by Linehan was #IStandWithKatherineDeves, which has seen hundreds of tweets from the UK and Australia in the space of three days.

The hashtag created by Linehan was #IStandWithKatherineDeves, which has seen hundreds of tweets from the UK and Australia in the space of three days.

More recently, Linehan said the upcoming Father Ted musical had been canned as a result of the negative publicity generated by his comments.

He also said the backlash from his comments ultimately led to the breakdown of his marriage.

Despite support from Scott Morrison and former PM John Howard, Ms Deves has come under fire from many people in recent days, including from those within her own party.

NSW Treasurer Matt Kean called for Ms Deves to be disendorsed because he believes she is neither “fit for office” nor “aligned with the values of the Liberal Party”.

Ms Deves frequently claims all women will be disadvantaged if trans women are allowed to compete alongside them, but no major women’s sporting organisations in Australia have raised this concern.
